The Politics of Ironman II | The Anti-Moderate

The best objection to be leveled against [super-hero movies] involves a stock super-hero-movie scene. I mean the scene where a small child boldly faces a villain and, rather than being crushed, is validated in its boldness by the sudden appearance of the hero (who smacks the bad-guy upside the head in such a way as to move the skirmish elsewhere). To me this seems like the epitome of paternalistic imperialism with the poisonous addition of over-affirmed individualism, a moment of pedagogy in which a role-model decisively affirms a student’s turn away from social responsibility and communal action toward self-assertion and Quixotic egoism.
