One Swat of Leviathan’s Tail: A Biblical Interpretation of the Events in Japan – Ancient Hebrew Poetry

In the wake of the earthquake and tsunami… the truth cannot be denied. Leviathan of old, the natural and amoral order which stands over against man, that same Leviathan God offered as a metaphor of man’s inability to “modify nature or negotiate his condition with the Lord”1 (Job 40:6-41:34), still rules. With one swat of his tail, Leviathan wreaked havoc with the best-laid plans of mice and men. The tinker toys of the modern Leviathan were laid low.

Modern Leviathan is no match for ancient Leviathan. It ought to be asked, but will not, since we worship the modern Leviathan, whether or not we should be in the business of making toys that, if struck by nature, threaten to undo us…

But let it be noted: the religions of antiquity, including that of the Bible, were more evidence-based than ours.
