We have to take into account how different life was a century ago, when Picasso was coming of age. He was brought up in Spain, where there was a whole brothel culture. In Malaga, where he grew up, his father was famous for going to the brothels. It was kind of a feather in his cap. The men would go to Mass on Sunday, and afterward they’d all go to the brothel. Then they’d go to the café, where they’d drink and discuss politics, sports, and sex—whether the new brunette in the whorehouse was better than the old one, for instance.
